Texas House of Representatives, District 137
- University of Houston
- Continental Airlines
Spivey focuses on three key issues to her candidacy on her campaign site:
Excerpt:"Education in the State of Texas should center around one common goal: Improving student achievement. This means preparing the next generation for postsecondary readiness, whether they want to pursue college, vocational school or immediate entry into the workforce.
The State of Texas must perform a comprehensive review of the school finance system in which we identify and eliminate wasteful spending and identify areas where more resources might need to be directed. For every State expenditure, we should ask: Is this expenditure improving student achievement.
The purpose of true education reform in Texas is not to eliminate the public school system. In looking for ways to improve student achievement, we must look at multiple approaches as reform can take place in any number for ways, in many forms. We must be open to alternatives that allow moms and dads real choices."
Excerpt:"In 2014, the U.S. Government takes over your healthcare. Did you want this? Your state representative did (see letter) – in fact he was 1 of only 10 state representatives in the state of Texas to pressure Congress to pass ObamaCare this year.
Scott Hochberg and the Democrats want Washington D.C. to get between you and your doctor. He wants Washington D.C. making decisions for you.
Sylvia Spivey will fight to stop the Washington D.C. takeover of your health care. New Thinking and New Solutions will lead to more choices, less cost and greater care with regard to your health."
Excerpt:"Let's increase financial accountability in Texas and make sure we're funding state necessities.
Let's eliminate Property Taxes and provide real tax relief so Texans have more of their hard earned money to spend.
Let's reduce Austin's red tape and regulations so job creators can create jobs. Where taxes are low, job creation is high."
Spivey ran for election to Texas House of Representatives District 137 and lost. She was unopposed in the March 2 Republican primary and was defeated by incumbent Democratic candidate Scott Hochberg in the November 2 general election.
