[edit] Template-info.png Template documentation
This is a document about the "short outcome" template. This template is primarily used to record vote totals for statewide ballot measures. For more information on that project and related writing guidelines, click here.

Code

The code below is the primary code used by most states. For states that require a supermajority vote or other requirements, refer to "special cases."

{{Short outcome
| title =
| yes =
| yespct =
| no =
| nopct =
| image =
| unresolved =

}}

Usage

Field Data to add Example code
title Name of measure Washington 1125
yes Number of "yes" votes 867,523
yespct Percentage of "yes" votes (don't add "%" symbol to field) 46.92
no Number of "no" votes 2,145,042
nopct Percentage of "no" votes (don't add "%" symbol to field) 61.33
image Add either Approveda or Defeatedd. If the election is "too close to call" add Too close to calltc {{approved}} or {{defeated}} or {{tooclose}}
unresolved If the election is "too close to call" (within 5%) add "Yes." If that is not the case, leave the field blank. Yes
state Enter the State Here Washington

Special cases

Most states require a simple majority to approve a proposed ballot measure. In those cases, you'd use the code outlined above. In other states, however, there are special requirements.

The states below outline those requirements and the specific code to use in those instances. Note that most of the outlined codes below contain additional fields.

Florida

Notable differences:

  • |state = Florida
{{Short outcome
| title =
| yes =
| yespct =
| no =
| nopct =

| unresolved =

}}

Hawaii

  • Hawaii. For a referred amendment to win in Hawaii, it must win a majority vote of 50% of those voting on the question and a majority of those who cast a ballot for any office in that election.

Notable differences:

  • |totalvote= requires you to enter the total votes cast in the general election that year, i.e. if only 10,000 people voted you enter that here.
  • |state = Hawaii
{{Short outcome
| title =
| yes =
| yespct =
| no =

Hawaii Special

  • Hawaii. For a referred amendment to win in Hawaii during a special election, it must win a majority vote of 50% of those voting on the question and a 30% of the registered voters in the state.

Notable differences:

  • |registeredvote= requires you to enter the total votes cast in the general election that year, i.e. if only 10,000 people voted you enter that here.
  • |state = Hawaii Special

  • Illinois. For a referred amendment to win in Illinois, it must win a supermajority vote of 60% of those voting on the question or a majority of those who cast a ballot for any office in that election.

Notable differences:

  • |smallestvote= requires you to enter the total votes for the lowest recorded election that year, i.e. if only 10,000 people voted for comptroller you enter that here.
  • |state = Illinois
{{Short outcome
| title =

If a ballot measure is overturned use the format below to update the election results box. In addition to updating the box, please make sure to add a note in the "Aftermath" section about the event. (click here for those guidelines)

Notable differences:

  • | overturned = if overturned, add "Yes" to this field
  • | casename = if a casename is available, add the case name. For example add: State ex rel. Thomson v. Zimmerman
  • | casenumber = if available, add the case number in the following format, example = 264 Wis. 644 (1953)
  • | link = if available, add a link to the case. Copy and paste the URL into this field

Example of an overturned measure: Wisconsin Legislative Redistricting Amendment, Question 1 (April 1953)

Nonstandard Option measure

If a ballot measure has nonstandard questions -- that is questions that are essentially not a yes or no -- this option will accommodate it. The formatting for this option is as nonstandard to this template as the measure itself is to the ballot. The template allows up to five options to be entered. You must tell the template which measure won in this case.

Example of an overturned measure: Wisconsin Legislative Redistricting Amendment, Question 1 (April 1953)

Notable differences:

  • |nonstandard = if the measure is nonstandard, add "Yes" to this field
  • |title = this is for the title of the measure
  • |winner = Enter a "1", "2", "3", "4", or "5" to tell the template which measure won. The numbers correspond with the number options below.
  • |1words = This is text of the first option
  • |1vote = This is the number of votes for the first option
  • |1votepct = This is the percentage of votes for the first option
  • |2words = This is text of the second option
  • |2vote = This is the number of votes for the second option
  • |2votepct = This is the percentage of votes for the second option
  • |3words = This is text of the third option
  • |3vote = This is the number of votes for the third option
  • |3votepct = This is the percentage of votes for the third option
  • |4words = This is text of the fourth option
  • |4vote = This is the number of votes for the fourth option
  • |4votepct = This is the percentage of votes for the fourth option
  • |5words = This is text of the fifth option
  • |5vote = This is the number of votes for the fifth option
  • |5votepct = This is the percentage of votes for the fifth option
