Located in the southeast region of the United States, Tennessee is bordered by Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri. Nicknamed “the Volunteer state,” Tennessee was the 16th state admitted to the Union in 1796. While Tennessee’s capital and second largest city is Nashville, the largest city in the state is Memphis. Currently, there are two Republican members of the U.S. Senate, a total of nine members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 33 members of the Tennessee State Senate and 99 members of the Tennessee House of Representatives. As of September 2013, Tennessee is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.
