Texas has an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.
Heading into the election the incumbent is Lloyd Doggett (D), who was first elected in 1994.

The 35th congressional district of Texas held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2012. in which the incumbent from the 25th district, Lloyd Doggett (D) won election. He defeated Susan Narvaiz (R), Ross Lynn Leone (L), Meghan Owen (G) and Simon Alvarado (I) in the general election.
