Born July 9, 1964 in Columbus, Nebraska, Senator Gay is a grain trader, and bank executive from Sarpy County, Nebraska. He has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Prior to his election to the Nebraska Legislature, he was a member of the Sarpy County Board of Commissioners  Gay is currently married to Tonee Gay with three children and is known to be Catholic.
Gay earned his Bachelors degree From the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business in 1987.
Gay began his professional experience as a grain broker for Commodity Traders Incorporated from 1987 to 1994. In 1994, he served a similar position for Switzer Trading Company until 1999. In that year, he became the vice president of investment services with American National Bank, and currently serves in that regard.
Gay began his political experience as a board member of the Sarpy County Board of Commissioners from 1994 to 2006. In 2007, he began serving as a senator on the Nebraska State Legislature.
Gay was involved with the Nebraska Association of County Officials in 2001.
Gay served on the Eastern Nebraska Human Services Agency in 1998 as president.
