In late April 2010, Emmer received the endorsement of the GOP in the 2010 gubernatorial race to succeed Gov. Tim Pawlenty.[1] However, he was defeated in the general election by Mark Dayton (D).
Biography
Tom Emmer was born in South Bend, Indiana but grew up in Edina, Minnesota. His family had roots in the state; his great grandfather founded Emmer Brothers Lumber in 1907. The company is today known as Viking Forest Products and Mark's brother, Jack, manages the business. Mark joined JROTC and attended an all-male college prep school, the St. Thomas Academy before attending college at Boston College and the University of Alaska. He played hockey for both schools and continues to be an avid player.
Dayton earned a Juis Doctorate in 1988 and spent several years practicing as a trial attorney before founding his own law firm. He served on the Delano City Council from 2003-2004 and the Independence City Council from 1995-2002. In 2004, he won election to the Minnesota State House of Representatives. In 2006 and again in 2006, he won decisive re-election victories.
Emmer is a member of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Minnesota State Bar Association, North Dakota State Bar Association, and Wisconsin State Bar Association.[2]
He has been married to Jacqueline Emmer since 1986; they have seven children.

2010
Emmer ran for governor in 2010. He faced Mark Dayton (D), Farheen Hakeem (G), and Tom Horner (Independence) in the general election on November 2, 2010. Emmer was defeated by Democratic candidate Mark Dayton.[3]
2008
On November 4, 2008, Tom Emmer won election to the District 19B Seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives, defeating Christine Brazelton. [4]
