Thomas Edward Perez (b. October 7, 1961, in Buffalo, New York) is the current Secretary of the Department of Labor. He was nominated on March 18, 2013, and confirmed by the Senate on July 18, 2013, by a vote of 54-46.[1] Perez' confirmation process was one of many to have an extended wait in 2013 despite passing through the Senate committee hearings in mid-May.[2]

He previously served as head of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.[3]

Biography

Perez is a Dominican-American born in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Brown University before earning a Master's degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.[4]
