Arinder originally announced he would not seek re-election in 2011, but doubled back on that pledge and declared he would run as an independent in early June.[2] He said his decision to not run as a Democrat was motivated by a desire "to give the people of Scott County the opportunity to make a statement in opposition to the growing partisan trend in Mississippi politics."[2] On September 13 his request to be removed from the ballot was granted by the Elections Commission.[3]
