Troy City Library Levy Increase (August 2011)
This measure would add to the local property taxes by a rate of .7 mills for a period of five years and be used exclusively for library operational and maintenance costs. The City council voted to create ballot language for the proposed measure but is not officially on the ballot until another vote is held on it. Library officials note that without additional money the library will be forced to close, residents have previously voted down other levy measures which would have funded library operations. Some noted that the levy would be too little to support a quality library while others stated that any tax increase is too much for residents at this time.
The Troy City Council' has given its support to this measure, noting that if the measure is defeated then the library will be forced to close because it will not have funding. The League of Women Voters and the Troy Board of Education have also given their support behind this measure. A residential organization, Save Troy has also been formed to help promote the library levy. When asked about the comment to burn the books by opponents, a spokeswomen noted that it was an outrageous idea.
A group opposed to the library, Safeguarding American Familes has paid for and posted signs all over town advocating the closure of the library as well as the burning of the books within the library once it is closed.
