The
2012 U.S. House of Representatives elections in
Illinois will take place on
November 6, 2012. Voters
will elect 18 candidates to serve in the U.S. House, one from each of the state's 18 congressional districts.
The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run was December 27, 2011. The primary elections will be held on March 20, 2012.
Prior to the 2010 census, Illinois had 19 U.S. House members but the state lost one seat as a result of the 2010 census.
Partisan breakdown
Heading into the November 6 election, the Republican Party holds 11 of the 19 Congressional seats from Illinois. However, the state lost one seat after the 2010 census and will elect 18 representatives.

Note: On April 5, 2012 Timothy V. Johnson announced his plans to retire after winning in the Republican primary.[56] He will not run for re-election in the general election.[56] Republican party chairmen from the 14 counties in the 13th congressional district selected Johnson's replacement to run against David Gill (D) in the general election on November 6, 2012. In May 2012 Rodney Davis was selected Johnson's appointment.[57]

Impact of redistricting=
With the 2011 redistricting, Illinois lost 1 of its current 19 House seats because the state's population failed to grow as fast as in other states.[72] Illinois has had 11 Republican congressmen and 8 Democrats since the November 2010 election.[72] The new map, designed by the dominant Democrats, could flip that advantage to as many as 12 Democrats and only 6 Republicans.[72]
