The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run was June 5, 2012. The primary elections will be held on August 14, 2012.
The election will fill the Class 1 Senate seat, which is currently held by Amy Klobuchar (D). First elected in 2006, Klobuchar is running for re-election in 2012.

Election history
2008
On November 4, 2008, Al Franken won election to the United States Senate. He defeated Norm Coleman, Dean Barkley (I), Charles Aldrich (L), James Niemackl (C), Michael Cavlan (I, Write-In), and Anthony Keith Price (I, Write-In) in the general election.[12]
2006
On November 7, 2006, Amy Klobuchar won election to the United States Senate. She defeated Mark R. Kennedy (R), Robert Fitzgerald, (I), Michael James Cavlan (G), and Ben Powers (C) in the general election.[13]
