Welcome to Utah on Ballotpedia!


Located near the west coast of the United States, Utah is bordered by Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Arizona and Nevada. Nicknamed “the Beehive state,” Utah was the 45th state admitted to the Union in 1896. Salt Lake City is the state’s capital and also largest city. Currently, there are two Republican members of the U.S. Senate, a total of 4 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 29 members of the Utah State Senate and 75 members of the Utah House of Representatives. As of September 2013, Utah is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.

The structure of the Utah judicial system is laid out in Article VIII of the state constitution. The state court system is made up of the Utah Supreme Court, the Utah Court of Appeals, the Utah District Courts, the Utah Juvenile Courts and the Utah Justice Courts.


There are two federal courts in Utah: the United States District Court for the District of Utah and District of Utah Bankruptcy Court. Appeals from these courts go to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
