Ortegon graduated with a degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry from Rutgers University. Ortegon worked as a lab manager or the University of Southern Colorado Biochemistry Research Lab from 1980 to 1984 and as research lab manager at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs Biotechnology Center.

Ortegon defeated Alexander Lucero-Mugatu in the August 10 primary. She was defeated by Angela Giron (D) in the November 2 general election.
