Located in the New England region of the United States, Vermont is bordered by New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and Canada. In addition, it is the only New England state that is not bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Nicknamed “the Green Mountain state” and the leading maple syrup producer in the U.S., Vermont was the 14th state admitted to the Union in 1791. While Montpelier is Vermont’s capital, the city of Burlington is the largest city in Vermont. Currently, there is one Democratic member of the U.S. Senate, one Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 30 members of the Vermont State Senate and 150 members of the Vermont House of Representatives. As of September 2013, Vermont is one of 13 Democratic state government trifectas.
