Virginia state hub.jpg

Welcome to Virginia on Ballotpedia!

Located in the south Atlantic region of the United States, the state of Virginia is bordered by Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Washington, D.C. and the Atlantic Ocean. Nicknamed both “the Old Dominion,” Virginia is officially known as the “Commonwealth of Virginia.” The state of Virginia is also nicknamed “the Mother of Presidents” after eight U.S. presidents were born there. Originally established by the Colony of Virginia as the first of what would be thirteen colonies, Virginia’s economy is now dominated by agriculture, U.S. federal agencies and U.S. military. While Richmond is the state’s capital, the city of Virginia Beach is the state’s most populated city. Currently, there are two Democratic members of the U.S. Senate, a total of 11 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 40 members of the Virginia State Senate and 100 members of the Virginia House of Delegates. As of September 2013, Virginia is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.
