Voters will see few contested in New Mexico primaries in June

SANTA FE, New Mexico:
There are 42 State Senate and 70 State House seats up for election this year. On June 5, there will be 22 contested Senate primaries and 30 contested House primaries. A contested primary is one in which at least two candidates will appear, giving voters a choice when casting their ballot.
With 224 possible party primaries (1 Democratic and 1 Republican primary for each seat), the 52 races represent only 23.21 percent of possible contested primaries.
Democrats currently control both chambers. After a strong showing in the 2010 elections, Republicans are attempting to win control of the state house for the first time since 1929.
