Welcome to Washington on Ballotpedia!

Located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, the state of Washington is bordered by Oregon, Idaho, Canada and the Pacific Ocean. Nicknamed “the Evergreen state,” Washington is named after George Washington, the first President of the United States and was the 42nd state admitted to the Union in 1889. While Olympia is the state’s capital, the city of Seattle is the state’s most populated city. Historically known as the Washington Territory, today Washington is the United States’ leading lumber and apple producer as well as a manufacturing hub. Currently, there are two Democratic members of the U.S. Senate, a total of ten members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 49 members of the Washington State Senate and 98 members of the Washington House of Representatives. As of September 2013, Washington is one of 13 Democratic state government trifectas.
