Located in the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S., the state of Washington is bordered by Oregon, Idaho, Canada and the Pacific Ocean. Nicknamed “the Evergreen State,” Washington is named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. Having achieved statehood in 1889, Washington became the 42nd state in the Union. While Olympia is the state’s capital, the city of Seattle is the state’s most populated city. Historically known as the Washington Territory, today, Washington is the United States’ leading lumber and apple producer as well as a manufacturing hub.
