Washington Initiative 177, also known as the Charter Schools Initiative, was on the November 5, 1996 election ballot in Washington as an Initiative to the Legislature, where it was defeated.
  • Yes: 762,367 (64.4)
  • No: 1,380,816 (35.6%) Defeated

The question asked on the ballot was, "Shall voters be authorized to create "renewed" school districts where nonprofit organizations may operate publicly-funded "independent" public schools with parental choice and revised state regulation?"

Four years later, voters also defeated the Charter Schools Act, Initiative 729.
