The Washington No Public Funding of Abortions Initiative, also known as Initiative 471, was on the November 6, 1985 ballot in Washington as an Initiative to the People, where it was defeated. The measure would have prohibited the public funding of abortion, except to prevent death.[1]

Text of measure

The language that appeared on the ballot:[1]

Shall public funding of abortions be prohibited except to prevent the death of the pregnant woman or her unborn child?[2]

Path to the ballot

Initiative 471 was filed on April 16, 1984 by Michael Undseth of Brier. 162,324 signatures were submitted to qualify it for the ballot. The measure was placed on the ballot as provided for by the state constitution.[3]
