The Washington Replace the Sales Tax with a Corporate Franchise Tax, or Initiative 435, was on the November 2, 1982 ballot in Washington as an Initiative to the People, where it was defeated. The measure would have terminated the state sales tax on food, the state corporate business tax and the occupation tax and imposed a 10% franchise tax on corporations.[1]

The language that appeared on the ballot:[1]

Shall corporate franchise taxes, measured by net income, replace sales taxes on food and state corporate business and occupation taxes?[2]

Path to the ballot

Initiative 435 was filed on April 12, 1982 by Dr. James A. McDermott of Seattle. 250,285 signatures were submitted to qualify it for the ballot. The measure was placed on the ballot as provided for by the state constitution.[3]
