Wayne Sanstead is a former Superintendent of Public Instruction in North Dakota. He was first elected to the position in 1984 and left office in 2013. Before becoming superintendent, Sanstead served as a state Senator, state Representative, and the Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota.

Sanstead announced on February 17, 2012 that he would not seek re-election in 2012. He noted "I've found real meaning in my life being a leader. Public service has been my life. So the decision didn't come lightly."[1] He was succeeded by Kirsten Baesler, who won election on November 6, 2012.

Biography

A native of Arkansas, Sanstead studied speech and political science at St. Olaf College. He later went on to earn advanced degrees in communications and secondary education. After graduating from St. Olaf, he taught for a year in Luverne, Minnesota before moving to Minot, North Dakota in 1960, where he taught high school for 18 years.[1]

Sanstead opted not to seek re-election in 2012.[1] Kirsten Baesler won election on November 6, 2012. Although the North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction is non partisan position, Baesler is a Republican.

2008

On November 4, 2008, Wayne G. Sanstead won re-election to the office of North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction. He defeated Max L. Laird in the general election.
