The West Virginia Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the state of West Virginia. The attorney general is elected by the people during each general election and not appointed by the governor. The attorney general is responsible for providing legal representation for all state agencies, state officials, state commissions and boards. Additionally, when requested by state officials the state attorney general is required to submit written legal opinions on issues that have not been previously addressed by a court of law. The attorney general cannot prosecute criminal cases. The attorney general's other duties include: enforcing the West Virginia's consumer protection laws, providing the public with consumer education and mediation services to resolve consumer complaints, protecting the civil rights of state citizens, and approving the form of all contracts in which the state purchases goods or services.

The current officeholder is Darrell McGraw.
