The West Virginia Board of Education maintains the following mission statement, which dictates educational policy throughout the department:[2]
The West Virginia Board of Education establishes policies and rules to assure implementation of West Virginia's Education goals and to ensure the general supervision, oversight and monitoring of a thorough and efficient educational system.[3]


The current West Virginia Superintendent of Schools is James Phares. The Deputy Superintendent of Schools is Charles Heinlein.[4]
