Ruppel is a farmer. He previously worked as a Teacher and Coach with Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation from 1973-2004. He has also been a teacher with Whitko School Corporation and Indianapolis Public Schools School Corporation, a delivery truck driver, electrician, and business owner.
He is a member of Butler University Alumni Association, Indiana Volunteer Fireman's Association, North Manchester United Methodist Church, State Fair Advisory Board, North Manchester Sons of American Legion, North Manchester Volunteer Fire Department, Indiana and American Associations of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and the Wabash County Farm Bureau.
