William Wainwright (b. October 19, 1947-July 17, 2012) was a Democratic member of the North Carolina House of Representatives. He represented District 12 from 1991 - 2012, and served as Speaker Pro Tempore from 2006 - 2012.

Wainwright held a Bachelor of Science degree from Memphis State University in 1970.

He passed away on July 17, 2012 due to heart complications.[1][2]

Wainwright filed to run for for re-election in 2012. He ran unopposed in the May 8, 2012 Democratic primary and would have faced Jim Dancy (R) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[3]
