BOISE, Idaho: As 2012 approaches, Idaho initiative supporters must look ahead in their calendars to check how long they have to collect signatures for ballot access.

Supporters must collect signatures and submit them by the May 1, 2012 petition drive deadline for their proposal to be considered for the ballot. For initiated state statutes, residents must collect 47,432 valid signatures in order to make the ballot.

Since Idaho residents can only propose initiated state statutes, there are no signature requirements for initiated constitutional amendments. There is one catch, though. According to Idaho initiative law, supporters must file signatures 18 months after they filed their initiative with the Idaho Secretary of State, or by the May 1 deadline, whichever comes first.
