$1.1M keeps Kansas courts from closing

Topeka, Kansas: Good news for the Kansas judicial system came in the form of a budget approval on May 20, when legislators approved $1.1 million in supplemental funding for the courts' operating expenses. This allowed Chief Justice Lawton Nuss to cancel the last four days of court closures that had been planned to save money. The courts did close for one day in April, with more furloughs planned later this week and in June. The closures affect the approximately 1,590 people employed by the judicial branch. The budget bill must still be signed by the Governor.
