The "Quieting Ancient Settlers" and the Betterment Acts, also known as Betterment Act, was on the 1785 ballot in Vermont as an advisory question. It was approved. The measure wolud have compensated "ancient" settlers for land that they had held prior to modern titling. The intial referendum offering full compensation failed, where a compromised bill offering half the assessed value passed.[1]
