SHELBY COUNTY, Alabama: Sixteen attorneys have been nominated to fill the judgeship on the Shelby County Circuit 18 bar. The vacancy was created when J. Michael Joiner was elevated from the trial court to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in February 2011.[1]

The Shelby County Judicial Commission must pick three of the sixteen names by March 28, and submit that short list to Gov. Robert L. Bentley, the recently-elected Republican Governor of Alabama.[1]

The Shelby County Judicial Commission has five members. They are Circuit 18 presiding judge H.L. "Sonny" Conwill, Doug Key, Jim Pino, Roy Martin and Bill Schroeder. Key and Pino are attorneys. Martin is a developer and Schroeder is a banker.[1]
