2012 elections preview: Michigan voters to select winners in congressional, legislative primaries

The primary season continues tomorrow, with elections in Michigan.
Here is what to look for in Michigan, where the polls will be open from 7am to 8pm Central and Eastern times:

U.S. Senate
There are five candidates running for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat tomorrow - 4 Republicans and 1 Democrat. Incumbent Debbie Stabenow is running unopposed in the Democratic primary. On the other side of the aisle, Clark Durant, Gary Glenn, Randy Hekman, and Pete Hoekstra compete for the Republican nomination.
U.S. House
Michigan has a total of 14 seats on the ballot in 2012. A total of 56 candidates have filed to run, made up of 20 Democratic challengers, 14 Republican challengers, 13 incumbents, and 9 third-party candidates. Including states with primaries tomorrow, a total of 353 U.S. House seats have held primaries. Thus far, 57.51% of possible primaries have been contested. Georgia's contested figure of 46.43% (13 out of 28 possible party primaries) is less competitive than the national average.
Six incumbents are unopposed in the primary election tomorrow: Dan Benishek (R) of District 1, Bill Huizenga (R) of District 2, Justin Amash (R) of District 3, Dave Camp (R) of District 4, Sander Levin (D) of District 9, and Candice Miller (R) of District 10.
The remaining seven incumbents face a primary challenge in tomorrow's election. They are as follows:
District 6: Incumbent Fred Upton faces former state representative Jack Hoogendyk.
District 7: Incumbent Tim Walberg is challenged by Dan Davis.
District 8: Incumbent Mike Rogers faces Vernon Molnar and Brian Hetrick.
District 12: Incumbent John D. Dingell, Jr. competes with challenger Daniel Marcin.
District 13: Incumbent John Conyers, Jr. is involved in a five-way primary battle with state senators Glenn Anderson and Bert Johnson, state representative Shanelle Jackson, and John Goci.
District 14: Incumbents Hansen Clarke and Gary Peters compete along with challengers Brenda Lawrence, Bob Costello, and Mary Waters.
State legislature
There are 110 total legislative seats with elections in 2012 - Only the House will hold elections in 2012.
There are 51 (46%) contested Democratic primaries and 36 (33%) contested Republican primaries. Thus, there will be 87 races with at least two candidates on the ballot. The 87 major party primaries represents 40% of possible primaries. This figure is higher than the current national contested average of 19.38% for states that have had filing deadlines.
House
In the House, there are a total of 36 incumbents facing a primary challenge - 18 Democrats and 18 Republicans. Several of the important races are highlighted below:
District 2: Incumbent Tim Bledsoe is running against incumbent Alberta Tinsley Talabi and challenger Anthony Zander.
District 3: Incumbent John Olumba faces incumbent Jimmy Womack, as well as two challengers, Christopher Alan Owens and Veronica Brown.
District 6: Democratic incumbent Maureen Stapleton is challenged by current district 12 incumbent Rashida Tlaib, as well as challenger Patrick O'Connell.
District 23: Republican incumbent Pat Somerville will face Jeremy Cady.
District 28: Incumbent Lesia Liss (D) is challenged by district 25 incumbent Jon M. Switalski.
District 83: Incumbent Paul Muxlow (R) is running against Bob Eick.
District 92: Democratic incumbent Marcia Hovey-Wright faces challenger Willie M. Walton.
