2014 elections review: Recapping state legislative primaries in four states

On June 10, 2014, primary elections took place in Maine, Nevada, North Dakota and South Carolina. There were 84 (10.2%) contested primaries of the possible 822. North Dakota was unique in that the Senate did not hold a single contested primary, while just two contested primaries were held in the House.
Forty (48%) of those contested primaries featured an incumbent. Three (7.5%) incumbents, all Republicans, lost their primary elections. In Maine, unofficial results put incumbent John Tuttle ahead of primary challenger Andrea Boland by just ten votes. Results collected by Bangor Daily News details 97 percent of precincts as being reported.[1]
Maine
June 10 elections in Maine saw a total of 24 state legislative primaries. Contests were held for four Democratic primaries and one Republican primary in the Maine State Senate, while the Maine House of Representatives had eight Democratic primaries and eleven Republican primaries. In those elections, three incumbents faced primary competition; two in the Senate and one in the House. One Senate incumbent lost a primary election.

Senate
Five primary contests were held in the Maine State Senate. One incumbent lost his primary.
- District 4: Incumbent Douglas Thomas (R) was defeated by House District 26 incumbent Paul T. Davis in the Republican primary. Davis faces David Ziemer (D) in the general election.
- District 5: James Dill defeated Herbert Clark in the Democratic primary. Dill will face Wanda Lincoln in the general election.
- District 14: David Bustin defeated Louis Sigel in the Democratic primary. Bustin will face Earle McCormick (R) and unaffiliated candidate Gary Quintal in the general election.
- District 25: Catherine Breen defeated Stephen Woods in the Democratic primary. Breen will face William Gardiner (R) in the general election.
- District 33: Incumbent John Tuttle (D) leads Andrea Boland by 10 votes in the Democratic primary with 97 percent of precincts reported.

House
Nineteen primary contests were held in the Maine House of Representatives. No incumbents lost their primary.
- District 54: Kim Talbot defeated Susan Dolan in the Republican primary. Talbot will face incumbent Andrew Mason (D) and Daniel Stromgren (G) in the general election.
- District 125: Gary Capehart defeated Katrin Teel in the Republican primary. Capeheart will face incumbent Victoria Kornfield (D) in the general election.
- District 133: Incumbent Ralph Chapman defeated David Guarente in the Democratic primary. Chapman will face Susan Walsh (R) in the general election.
- District 148: Alan Whittemore defeated N. Michael Blier in the Democratic primary. Whittemore will face incumbent Tyler Clark (R) and unaffiliated candidate Gregory Ward in the general election.

Nevada
June 10 elections in Nevada saw a total of 31 state legislative primaries. Contests were held for two Democratic primaries and four Republican primaries in the Nevada State Senate, while the Nevada State Assembly had nine Democratic primaries and sixteen Republican primaries. In those elections, thirteen incumbents faced primary competition; two in the Senate and eleven in the House.

- District 6: Incumbent Harvey Munford (D) defeated Arrick Foster and Anthony Snowden in the Democratic primary.
- District 26: Incumbent Randy Kirner (R) defeated Lisa Krasner and Robb Archie in the Republican primary. Because of the primary system in Nevada, Krasner will advance to the general election to take on Kirner.

North Dakota
