2014 elections review: Recapping state legislative primaries in six more states

On June 3, 2014, primary elections took place in Alabama, California, Iowa, Montana, New Mexico, and South Dakota. As of today, Alabama's results are incomplete. There were 281 (23.6%) contested primaries of the possible 1190. One hundred and forty-six (51.9%) of those contested primaries featured an incumbent. Four (2.9%) incumbents, one Democrat and three Republicans, lost their primary election.
California
June 3 elections in California saw a total of 75 state legislative primaries. Contests were held for 10 seats in the California State Senate and 64 seats in the California State Assembly. In those elections, 43 incumbents faced primary competition; one in the Senate and 42 in the House.

- District 36: Incumbent Steve Fox (D) and Tom Lackey (R) defeated Kermit F. Franklin (D), JD Kennedy (R) and Suzette M. Martinez (R) in the blanket primary.
- District 39: Incumbent Raul Bocanegra (D) and Patty Lopez (D) defeated Kevin J. Suscavage (D) in the blanket primary.

Iowa
June 3 elections in Iowa saw a total of 30 state legislative primaries. Contests were held for seven Democratic and six Republican primaries in the Iowa State Senate. The Iowa House of Representatives held seven Democratic primaries and ten Republican primaries. In those elections, nine incumbents faced primary competition: four in the Senate and five in the House. No incumbents lost a primary election.

Montana
June 3 elections in Montana saw a total of 125 state legislative primaries. Contests were held for four Democratic primaries and 12 Republican primaries in the Montana State Senate. The Montana House of Representatives had contests in 17 Democratic primaries and 24 Republican primaries. In those elections, 18 incumbents faced primary competition: two in the Senate and 16 in the House.

- District 9: Incumbent Llew Jones (R), redistricted from the current District 14, defeated Joseph Large. Jones will face the winner of the Democratic primary, which ended in a 13-vote margin.
- District 43: Incumbent Scott Boulanger (R), redistricted from the current District 44, was challenged by House District 87 incumbent Pat Connell. Unofficial results show Connell leading Boulanger by 39 votes. Robert Schumacher was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

- District 19: Incumbent Roger Hagan was defeated by Randy Pinocci in the Republican primary. Pinocci will face Evan Bowser (D) in the general election.
- District 78: Incumbent Gordon Pierson defeated Douglas Shidler II in the Democratic primary. Pierson will face Suzzann Nordwick in the general election.

- District 9: Incumbent Patricia Lundstrom defeated Jordon Johnson, Olin Clawson and Yolanda Ahasteen-Azua in the Democratic primary. Lundstrom is unopposed in the general election.
- District 29: Incumbent Thomas Anderson was defeated by David Edward Adkins in the Republican primary. Adkins will face Ronnie Martinez (D) in the general election. Anderson won the general election by a margin of victory of 5 percent in 2012.
- District 34: Incumbent Mary Helen Garcia faced Bealquin Bill Gomez and Christian Lira in the Democratic primary. Unofficial results show Gomez leading Garcia by 9 votes. The winner of that election will be unopposed in the general election.
- District 40: Incumbent Nick Salazar defeated Bengie Regensberg in the Democratic primary. Salazar will face James R. Gallegos (R) in the general election.
- District 56: Incumbent Zachary Cook defeated Jim Lowrance in the Republican primary. Cook will be unopposed in the general election.
- District 65: Incumbent James Roger Madalena, Jr. defeated Orlando Lucero in the Democratic primary. Madalena will be unopposed in the general election.
- District 70: Incumbent Tomas E. Salazar defeated Richard Vigil in the Democratic primary. Vigil will be unopposed in the general election.

South Dakota

- District 33: Incumbent Phil Jensen defeated David Johnson in the Republican primary. Robin Page defeated Haven Stuck in the Democratic primary. Jensen and Page will face off in the general election.
- District 35: Terri Haverly defeated Larry D. Baker in the Republican primary. No Democratic candidate filed to run.

- District 20: Incumbent Tona Rozum and Joshua Klumb defeated David Stevens in the Republican primary and will face James V. Schorzmann (D) in the general election.
- District 23: Incumbent Justin Cronin and Michele Harrison defeated Dale Hargens, Larry Nielson and Gene Toennies in the Republican primary. No Democratic candidate filed to run.
- District 24: Incumbents Mary Duvall and Tim Rounds defeated Mark Venner in the Republican primary. They will face Thomas Scheinost (D) in the general election.
- District 28A: Incumbent Dean Schrempp defeated Thomas Van Norman in the Democratic primary. No Republican candidate filed to run.
- District 29: Incumbent Dean Wink and Thomas Brunner defeated Tammy Basel, Wanda Blair and Terri Jorgenson in the Republican primary. No Democratic candidate filed to run.
