36 Minnesota legislators are not seeking re-election

ST. PAUL, Minnesota: With the adjournment of the Minnesota State Legislature last Thursday, 36 legislators celebrated their last day in their seat. Most are retiring while some are running for another office. It marks the most retirements in a year since 1982, when 40 legislators called it quits.[1]
Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers, but retired in higher numbers than Democrats - 22 to 14. Thirteen - 9 Republicans and 4 Democrats - are leaving the Senate, while twenty-three - 13 Republicans and 10 Democrats - are retiring from the House.[1]

All 67 Senate seats and 134 House seats are up for election this year. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in these elections is June 5, 2012. The primary election day will be August 14, 2012.
