501(c)(29)
501(c)(29) is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax exemption status that applies to CO-OP health insurance issuers under the Affordable Care Act. These entities are nonprofit organizations that receive loans or grants from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) CO-OP program in order to offer health insurance to consumers. 501(c)(29) organizations may not operate for the benefit of any individual or shareholder, but must devote their earnings to providing affordable health insurance.[1]
