A Progressive California is a super PAC that aims to support progressive candidates to represent California in federal office. The organization was founded in 2017 to support Kevin de Leon (D-Calif.) in his 2018 campaign for U.S. Senate.[1]

Background
A Progressive California was founded in October 2017 as a super PAC supporting Kevin de Leon (D-Calif.) in his campaign for U.S. Senate. De Leon announced he would run to replace incumbent Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on October 15, 2017.[4] On October 16, 2017, California Democratic political operatives Dave Jacobson and Maclen Zilber founded A Progressive California.
According to CNN, the super PAC was founded to help de Leon but had also committed to supporting similar candidates. In a joint statement announcing A Progressive California's launch, Jacobson and Zilber wrote, "Today's California represents the heartbeat of the resistance against Donald Trump's racist, xenophobic and divisive Washington. ... In many ways, Kevin de León has been a warrior on the forefront of the resistance's battle, standing up for working people, the environment, immigrants, equality and health care for all. His progressive, inclusive and compassionate California-driven agenda is desperately needed in Washington."[5]

2018 elections
On October 16, 2017, A Progressive California announced its support for de Leon and released an ad, titled "We Need Kevin." The ad stated, "Kevin de Leon has led the resistance against Donald Trump in California, showing we can lead the nation on climate change, better jobs, universal healthcare, and immigrant rights."[6]
Legal status
A Progressive California is a super PAC. A super PAC is a political committee that can solicit and spend unlimited sums of money. A super PAC cannot contribute directly to a politician or political party, but it can spend independently to campaign for or against political figures.
