Aaron R. Fichtner is the former New Jersey Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development. He was appointed as acting commissioner by Gov. Chris Christie on September 23, 2016, and nominated to take the job permanently on September 26, 2016.[1]

Biography

Fichtner graduated from Vassar College in 1991 with a B.A. in history before attending Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned a master's in city planning in 1993. Fichtner spent several years working on urban planning projects in Atlanta and Jersey City before joining Rutgers University in 1997 as the director of research and evaluation at the university's Heldrich Center for Workforce Development. Fichtner earned his Ph.D. in planning and public policy from Rutgers University in 2005. In 2010, Fichtner left Rutgers to join the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development.[2]

Political career

New Jersey Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development (2016-2018)

Fichtner was appointed as acting commissioner by Gov. Chris Christie on September 23, 2016, and nominated as commissioner on September 26, 2016.[3] He was succeeded by Robert Asaro-Angelo, who was appointed by Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.[4]

New Jersey Deputy Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development (2012-2016)

Fichtner assumed the role of deputy commissioner in 2012. As stated on the website for the city of Fort Monmouth, in that role, "he directly oversaw the department’s program areas including Workforce Operations and Business Services, Workforce Development and Economic Opportunity, Research and Information, Income Security, and Labor Standards and Safety Enforcement"[3]

New Jersey Assistant Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development (2010-2012)

Fichtner first joined the department in 2010 as the assistant commissioner for labor planning and analysis.[3]
