On his campaign Facebook page, Martinez stated his reasons for seeking a spot on the board, saying,
| “ | It’s all about the kids, isn’t it? We have a responsibility to do everything in our power to bring out the best in them and give them the skills needed to be successful, not just in education, but in the community, in work, and in life.[4] | ” |

He also complimented his opponent, incumbent Barbara Smith, but highlighted the perspective he could bring to the seat:
| “ | We love TISD; we love our teachers and administrators. Mrs. Smith has done a fine job, but I have kids in this district; we are invested. And looking at the composition of the board and the population of Tyler, there is clearly an underrepresented community and as a product of public school and the first in my family to graduate from college, I can identify with some of the hurdles in Latino households.[4] | ” |

Martinez addressed the issue of the school district competing with other schooling options as follows:
| “ | With the increase in charter and private schools, parents have more options than ever for finding quality education. Competition should be making everyone better, we need to find new ways to cater to these young minds. We should be actively selling our district to newcomers, and championing our current students.[4] | ” |
