Abdel Elhassan
Abdel Elhassan was a candidate for Place 5 representative on the Irving City Council in Texas. He was defeated in the general election on May 6, 2017.
Biography
Elhassan earned a degree in economics from the University of Khartoum. At the time of his 2017 run for office, he owned the car rental business Golden Gate Group LLC. His experience also includes work as a taxi operator for Jet Taxi and Yellow Cab and as a district administrator in Sudan.[1][2]

2017
The city of Irving, Texas, held an election for mayor and city council on May 6, 2017. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was February 17, 2017.
Mayor Beth Van Duyne opted not to run for re-election in 2017. The city council seats for Places 3 and 5 were up for election.[3] Incumbent Oscar Ward defeated Abdel Elhassan in the general election for the Place 5 seat on the Irving City Council.[4]

In response to a question from the League of Women Voters about the two most pressing issues facing Irving, Elhassan said:
“ | 1-insuring the safety, security for all citizens. This will be done by making sure we support all our Fire Department and Police Department and all city employees
2-The number one priory is connecting our diverse citizens to connect and participate in city government by volunteering for City board committees and commissions. I will do this through outreach.[5] |
