Campaign themes

2014

In 2014, Guillen highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:[3]
Public Safety

  • Excerpt: "Safer streets and rapid 911 emergency response are concerns for us all. I’ll expand walking, beat and bike patrols and equip our firefighters and police officers with the tools they need to save lives. Adequate lighting and speed bumps also affect our safety."

Neighborhood services

  • Excerpt: "A financially stable, balanced city budget must support: sidewalk and pothole repair; anti-blight programs and litter removal; adequate night lighting in our neighborhoods, parking areas, and commercial districts; improved library hours, after-school and senior programs."

Education

  • Excerpt: "I’ll expand partnerships with the Oakland Unified School District and the Peralta Colleges to continue to increase safety at school sites, upgrade classrooms, and prepare Oakland’s students for 21st century careers and the global economy. Our schools must do better to train our students for better paying jobs and provide the career and technical skills to grow our local economy."

Housing and transportation

  • Excerpt: "We are rapidly approaching a situation where future generations of Oaklanders will be unable to afford a home in our City. As City Councilmember, I will champion efforts citywide to create more affordable housing options linked to public transit programs that bring neighbors and visitors alike into our thriving commercial districts."

2012

In 2012, Guillen highlighted following issues on his campaign website:[4]

  • Balancing Budgets and Cutting Waste
Excerpt: "California is grappling with a fiscal and economic crisis of historic proportions. To continue making investments in our schools, protect the safety net, keep our neighborhoods safe, and meet the demands of a growing state, we must find long-term revenue solutions to our state budget problems."
  • Good Jobs and New Economic Opportunities
Excerpt: "Like many communities around the country, the East Bay is facing high unemployment and a slow economic recovery. Abel Guillen has helped deliver over $20 million for new career education and job training programs at East Bay community colleges. "
  • Investing in Education
Excerpt: "As a Community College Trustee, a product of local public schools and the first in his family to graduate from college, Abel Guillen know firsthand the transformative power of education. He understands that public education is the foundation of strong communities and a vibrant economy."
  • Environmental Action
Excerpt: "California and the East Bay have a long history of leading the way by protecting our environment and producing sustainable energy. We must continue to “protect the commons” and maintain this vital legacy."
  • Access to Affordable Healthcare
Excerpt: "Improving access to and the quality of health care is one of the greatest challenges facing our state. We must strive towards a health care system that provides cost-effective, quality health care to all individuals – regardless of one’s background."
