Four of the seven seats on the Abilene Independent School District school board were up for by-district general election on May 7, 2016. Place 1 incumbent Robert Laird opted not to seek re-election leaving Jeff Arrington to run unopposed and win the open seat. Place 2 incumbent Randy Piersall also ran unopposed and won re-election to his seat. In Place 3, newcomer Daryl Zeller defeated Sammy Garcia in the race for the open seat of incumbent Barry Hoefer. Angie Wiley defeated James Miller in the race for the vacant Place 7 seat.[1][2]

Voter and candidate information
The Abilene ISD school board is composed of seven members who are elected by district to four-year terms in specifically numbered seats. Candidates file to run for a specific seat, but all voters in the school district are eligible to vote for every seat up for election. Places 1, 2, 3, and 7 were scheduled for general election on May 7, 2016. There was no primary election.[3]
Candidates running for the school board had to be a United States citizen, a resident of Texas for at least 12 months, and a resident of the district for at least six months. Candidates also had to be 18 years of age or older and registered to vote.[3]

About the district
Abilene Independent School District is located in central Texas in portions of Jones County and Taylor County. The county seat of Jones County is Anson, and the county seat of Taylor County is Abilene. In 2014, Jones County was home to was 19,970, while Taylor County had a populuation of 136,051, according to the United States Census Bureau.[8] The district was the 69th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 17,329 students.[9]
Demographics
Jones County and Taylor County underperformed in comparison to Texas as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 9.3 percent of Jones County residents and 24.6 percent of Taylor County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.1 percent of state residents. The median household income in Jones County and Taylor County was $42,287 and $44,695, respectively, compared to $52,576 for the state. The poverty rate in Jones County and Taylor County was 23.4 percent and 15.9 percent, respectively, while it was 17.2 percent for the entire state.[8]
