My name is Adam Chitwood, and I’m a proud Democrat running for Georgia House District 173.

I was born in 1988 in Muscatine, Iowa, I didn’t grow up with stability or opportunity. My father died young in a car accident. My mother worked odd jobs while we relied on food stamps. Some months we went hungry after walking to buy groceries in snow and cold. We faced housing instability and homelessness.

With a strong support group—often women—I figured out college, supported myself through school (still on food assistance), and built a professional career. Today I serve in senior leadership for America’s largest company. A few years ago my career brought me to Thomasville in District 173. I fell in love with this community—its small-town character, pride, and neighborliness. Now I want to return the favor.

I’m a People-First Democrat ready to fight for working families struggling with groceries, housing, and healthcare.

A deeply personal reason: At 19 weeks, my wife and I learned our child would not survive. We made the devastating choice to end the pregnancy but couldn’t afford cremation. That taught me government has no place in our most painful personal medical decisions.

District 173 is worth fighting for. It’s time for leadership that puts our people first.
  • Economic Dignity

I believe full-time work in District 173 should provide a decent life. Growing up, my family relied on food stamps. Some months we went hungry after walking to buy groceries in the snow. I worked minimum-wage jobs and relied on SNAP until I was 26. Those experiences taught me: hard work should never leave families struggling.

    I support:

    • Raising Georgia’s minimum wage to $18/hour by 2030 • Creating a Georgia Earned Income Tax Credit • Up to $2,000 per child childcare tax credit (under $150k) • Expanding SNAP/EBT to fight hunger

    • No tax increases on families earning under $150,000
  • Strong Rural Schools Strong public schools are the backbone of South Georgia communities. Growing up in rural Iowa, I attended a great public school where teachers like my first-grade teacher, Ms. Clevinger, changed my life. I know firsthand how powerful great educators can be. In District 173, too many rural schools struggle to attract and keep teachers. I support: • Raising teacher pay statewide by $6,000 over two years • Adding a $5,000 annual rural teacher incentive • Modernizing the QBE funding formula for rural districts • Expanding Career and Technical Education so students can stay local Our kids deserve excellent schools without having to leave home. I’m ready to fight for them.
  • Healthcare Access Quality healthcare shouldn’t be out of reach in rural Georgia. As a child, I waited nearly a week for treatment after breaking a bone. At 19 weeks, my wife and I learned our child wouldn’t survive. We chose to end the pregnancy but couldn’t afford cremation. That taught me government has no place in our most personal medical decisions. I support: • Medicaid expansion • $200M Rural Hospital Fund • Rural loan repayment for doctors & nurses • Telehealth and reproductive rights I’ll fight for District 173 families to get the care they need close to home.
I’m most passionate about economic dignity for working families and expanding healthcare access in rural Georgia. I will fight to raise the minimum wage to $18 per hour, support working families with earned income and childcare tax credits, expand Medicaid, stabilize rural hospitals, and protect women’s right to make their own healthcare decisions.
