Biography

Adam Koehler was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned an associate degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1997 and a bachelor's degree from Capella University in 2004. His career experience includes leading Reversed Out Creative, being the creative director for dotloop, and starting CovWorx Coworking. Koehler has run a podcast called Side Hustle City and has been affiliated with Legatus, Adopt-a-Class, the School for the Creative & Performing Arts, and the University of Cincinnati.

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Adam Koehler and I am running for Ohio State House Representative in District 24. I was raised in the district and have lived in many of the neighborhoods including, Mt. Auburn, Price Hill and Westwood. I also attended the School for the Creative and Performing Arts from 1988-1995 in OTR and currently sit on it's Funding Board. I am also a board member at Adopt-A-Class, a program that provides mentors to inner-city schools. I also act as an Entrepreneur in Residence at UC where I mentor students in the business school. I hold degrees from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Capella University. I've owned a local digital ad agency for over 12 years and a coworking space. I am also heavily involved in the Cincinnati startup scene after the sale (2015, Zillow) of a startup I cofounded in 2008 called dotloop where we employed hundreds of people.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

My primary campaign is based on quality education for the residence in my district.

Anyone who has overcome challenges in their lives to live their dreams.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Ides of March.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty and actual caring for the communities we serve.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I am a hard worker who has overcome many obstacles in my life. As the son of a single-mother and alcoholic absentee father I know the struggles too many people in our community face. There is a sense of hopelessness for many and I don't just tell my district about those, I also will provide clear opportunities to make a better life.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Listening to the people and acting in their best interest.

What legacy would you like to leave?

More jobs, safer communities and a better educated district where people thrive.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The Challender disaster. I believe I was in the first grade at North Avondale Montessori.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I worked for a non-profit called Citizens Against Substance Abuse when I was 14. It was a summer job I had for two years until I graduated from SCPA in 1995. We produced a public access television show for teenagers where we discussed fun ways to have fun and stay sober.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Overcoming poverty.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?

Common sense cooperation an leadership. We represent the people of Ohio and should always keep their safety, and best interests in mind.

What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?

Jobs and housing. There is a migration to the sun belt for not just people but business as well. We need to keep smart people in Ohio to create businesses and jobs.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of a unicameral state legislature, in your opinion?

Benefits would be faster legislation but on the flip side that might not be a good thing. Some ideas are just not good and should be held up in bureaucracy until they go away.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

Not at all. I believe the closer they are to the people and their issues the better.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Of course.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

Not the one we just experienced. We need a system that could potentially use technology in an unbiased way to set district borders. Partisan human intervention in something so important will always lead to an unfair outcome.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

Finance.

Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

Kyle Koehler. He is my cousin and a good man who cares about the State of Ohio.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

Not at this time. I just care about making my district a better place.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I grew up in poverty in some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the State of Ohio. I have heard many stories that would be tough for the average person to sit through but also hit too close to home for some. Without going into specifics I will say we are in desperate need of safety in District 24.

Should the legislature oversee or grant the use of emergency powers?

We all just lived through a pandemic that required fast acting legislation. The ability for lawmakers to call for special sessions would be necessary in some cases.

Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?

Of course it is. We are too divided as a country and it seems to be getting worse.
