My name is Adam Powell, and I’m running for City Council in North Austin’s beautiful District 7. I’ve worked as a union organizer, teacher recruiter, and within state government. I’m the only candidate in this race who was born in Austin, and I’ve served in many volunteer roles within the community. This includes serving as a Board Member with Austin’s SAFE Alliance, as Vice President of the North Shoal Creek Neighborhood Association, and as a Member/former Chair of a committee with CapMetro.
  • Address the Housing Affordability Crisis. This is personal: I was raised in the northern suburb of Leander because my educator parents couldn’t afford to live within Austin proper. I support more subsidized affordable housing, building housing at a rate that keeps up with our explosive growth, and increasing assistance to homeowners and renters.
  • Improving Transportation and Mobility in District 7. Many areas of District 7 aren’t safe to navigate outside of a car. We urgently need to improve our sidewalks, bike lanes, and public transit options. I’m also committed to a future of rail throughout District 7, especially through connecting the existing CapMetro Red Line to the planned Project Connect lines.
  • Fix Austin Energy. In the 21st Century, Austinites shouldn’t have to worry about losing power. But in the last few years, we’ve seen far too many deadly outages and long disruptions to our daily lives. District 7 neighborhoods were dark for far too long after the 2021 and 2023 winter storms. In the years since, power outages continue to affect Austin Energy customers throughout North Austin, including power outages on the hottest day of this year. We are long overdue for making our grid stronger, smarter, and greener. If we make these investments and improve key services, we can weather the next storm with the lights on and make Austin a national leader in preparing our grid for the effects of climate change.
I’m passionate about the potential for local government to make tangible and meaningful impacts on people’s lives. I don’t want to use this office as a stepping stone to state or national campaign, I just want to serve my hometown as District 7’s next City Council Member.
When I’m gone, I hope people remember me as some who truly loved Austin.
Austin City Council Members have the responsibility of appointing volunteers to city Boards, Commissions, and Committees. There are a wide range of these that Austinites can serve on including a Music Commission, College Student Commission, African American Quality of Life Commission, Planning Commission, and so much more. These Boards, Commissions, and Committees frequently make policy and budgetary recommendations to City Council, directly shaping Austin’s future.
