Two of the eight seats on the Oklahoma City Public Schools school board were up for general election on February 9, 2016. District 3 incumbent Philip Horning did not file to seek re-election. Two candidates vied to replace him: Carrie Coppernoll Jacobs and Adam Zodrow. District 4 incumbent Laura Massenat filed the paperwork to seek re-election on December 7, 2015, but officially withdrew her candidacy on December 12, 2015. Due to this lack of opposition candidate Paula Lewis did not appear on the ballot and was automatically elected.[4]

School safety

The key, apart from working with our teachers and students to cultivate healthy and safe environments, is to somehow work with our district and legislature to get class sizes down...When students feel known, they don’t have to bully to get attention, they don’t have to be the aggressor or victim of senseless violence, they don’t drop out, and they are willing to put in the time, energy, and effort it takes to be the best student and “family member” that they can be. I feel strongly about this based on conversations I’ve had with teachers around this great district, from my personal teaching career, and from the time that I have gotten to spend with teachers under my direction in Yukon Public Schools and OKCPS.[6]

Revitalizing neighborhood schools

We have to choose to keep our kids in our neighborhood schools. We have to choose to be an active participant in the daily life of our kids’ classrooms. And perhaps most importantly of all, we have to choose to invest in the lives of the families around us.My hope as Board member for District 3 is that in my time on the board, Oklahoma City sees an unprecedented return to the neighborhood school. My hope is that the amazing charter schools that are popping up all over our city will truly serve as flagships for improving the schools around them, and that families from all walks of life will join together to bring local pride and local energy back into our neighborhood schools![6]
