Addisu Demissie is the former campaign manager for U.S. Sen. Cory Booker's 2020 presidential campaign. Demissie was the campaign manager for Booker's 2013 special election to the Senate. Prior to Booker's presidential campaign, Demissie managed Gov. Gavin Newsom's (D-Calif.) 2018 gubernatorial campaign. He also worked on campaigns for Hillary Clinton, Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama, and John Kerry.[1]

Career

Demissie began his political career on Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign.[2] He worked on Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign during the 2008 primaries and was Obama's Ohio get-out-the-vote director for the 2008 general election.[1] Demissie was named political director of the Democratic National Committee's Organizing for America project in 2009.[3] In 2010, he was policy counsel at Google, before joining Emanuel's 2011 Chicago mayoral campaign as field director.[1] In 2011 and 2012, he worked on multiple campaigns in California.[3]

After managing Booker's successful 2013 Senate campaign, Demissie worked as national voter outreach and mobilization director for Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, and then as campaign manager for Newsom's 2018 California gubernatorial bid.[3]

As of August 2019, Demissie was a principal political consultant at 50+1 Strategies, which he co-founded in 2011. He was vice president and director of grassroots advocacy at The Messina Group from 2014 until 2017.[1]

He received a B.A. in political science from Yale University in 2001 and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 2008.[1]

Campaign strategy

In April 2019, Demissie told a group of reporters, "We’re not building this campaign to win a poll in April of 2019. We’re trying to win a primary in February of 2020."[4] Regarding campaign strategy in New Hampshire, he told the New Hampshire Union Leader, "The traditional, winnowing responsibility that New Hampshire has is even more critical when you have a field of 20."[5]
