Addivinola and Clark advance to general election in Massachusetts
October 16, 2013
Boston, Massachusetts: The field of ten candidates running in Massachusetts' 5th District special election was narrowed down to a single nominee from each party after the primary elections yesterday.[1][2] Katherine Clark (D) and Frank Addivinola (R) defeated challengers in their respective party’s primaries to win the nominations.[3][4]
The special election is being held to fill the vacancy left by former Rep. Ed Markey's special election victory for the vacant Senate seat.[5] Markey won election to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in the general election on June 25, 2013. The seat was formerly held by Secretary of State John Kerry, when he was nominated for his current position.[6][7]
Clark beat fellow Democratic candidates Will Brownsberger, Peter Koutoujian, Martin Long, Paul John Maisano, Karen Spilka and Carl Sciortino.[6] Addivinola defeated challenger Mike Stopa and Tom Tierney in the Republican primary.[8] Addivinola commented that he is looking forward to the general election.[9]
“I think I’m going to do fantastic,” Addivinola said in a statement after primary results were reported. “We have a message that resonates with voters. What people are concerned about are economics and jobs. We’re talking about how we can get this economy to function again. I’m battle tested. I’m going to work hard to get my message out.”[9]
Clark will face off against Addivinola in the general election on December 10, 2013.[10]
Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District is considered a safe Democratic district. The state currently has an all Democratic congressional delegation.[11][12] The winner of the general election will then face voters again in 2014 for a full term.[13]
