Hello, my name is Adriaan DeVilliers (pronounced “Adreuhn, DuhvUHLyears”).

I’m running in the 2024 Election to be your Representative for Florida District 71, covering Manatee County west of I-75. Since 1986, Patricia and I have been happily married and we are proud parents of two great sons. As first-generation immigrants and proud American citizens, we deeply understand the true essence of American history, freedom, and the importance of immigration. I’m a civil engineer, and Patricia is a dentist and oral pathologist. Since becoming citizens, we’ve been active participants in the political process. Initially a Republican voter, I grew disillusioned with the party’s shift towards divisiveness, hostility, and in some cases authoritarianism and fascism. I believe in civility, respect, and acceptance, values I seek in leaders who can guide our nation to greater heights.

Now is the time for leaders who can heal and unite. I am passionate about working with people from all walks of life to bridge our divides and create a future filled with opportunity and hope. By coming together, we can achieve greatness and leave a lasting legacy for our children.
  • I stand for Responsible Development, in balance with infrastructure.

Everyone driving daily in Manatee County is keenly aware that there is a gross imbalance between development and infrastructure, as it unfolded during the past 30 years. Responsible development includes: Save Florida’s Home Rule: I will oppose and strive to reverse legislation my opponent has signed onto and supported that nullify the voices of local communities. Protect our Environment: Oppose and strive to reverse legislation my opponent has signed onto that completely dilutes environmental considerations for approving development permits and insufficiently treat industrial runoff.

All this is critical for the long-term viability and prosperity of our area.
  • Democracy under threat: I will work to restore the voice of the people over government, not Tallahassee dictating our lives and undermining our votes and voices. We must unite for a more civil, less divisive, rhetoric in politics where one-on-one, we have much more in common than portrayed by politicians. An impartial look at opportunities and living conditions among different demographic groups shows that many of our fellow citizens do not share the same opportunities for the pursuit of happiness and prosperity our Constitution calls for. Our legislation must improve the lives and prospects for our lower-income population, nor undermine them or push them aside. The prosperity and happiness of everyone is interdependent.
  • Schools I will work to ensure our schools and teachers are properly funded and not politicized. Under the guise of "Freedom of Choice", our Florida government, supported 100% by my opponent, continues to indirectly defund schools and teachers, particularly in the most vulnerable areas and lower income communities. They are diverting school funds away from public schools to unregulated profit-driven companies falling all over themselves to join the lucrative charter school industry. Destroying public schools is not a viable long- term solution to providing an uplifting education for all. Our children must be prepared across the board to face the realities of a rapidly changing world of jobs, not just a select few of them.
Personal choice in Health & Reproductive Rights is nothing less than a fundamental human freedom for women, include the right to life, and freedom to make informed choices about their bodies without government interference. The rights include access to comprehensive sexual education, contraception, safe abortion, prenatal care, and support during childbirth. Ensuring these rights empowers women to lead healthy lives and make decisions that align with their well-being, morals and beliefs. We must ensure access to reproductive health services, including family planning information and care. Violations, such as forced sterilization, early marriage, and denial of services, persist in Florida today, and is not acceptable.
An elected official should have integrity, accountability, sound principles, and transparency as core attributes. Sadly, that is no longer the case as we see many politicians flip-flopping so often it makes your head spin. They must actively listen to the people and be willing to collaborate across party lines for the common good of all, even at times in opposition to his/her own party, for the sake of common good. Effective communication, adaptability, and a strong work ethic are crucial. The very title of a District Representative defines the required priority to represent the will of the people of the District, across all party lines and measured against the background of equal growth and prosperity opportunities for everyone in the District, the State and the Nation.
I believe that I am a fair and compassionate person, able to place or attempt to place myself into the shoes of others. I absolutely detest discrimination and believe that diversity is a fact of life ... as much as fingerprints are unique to a person, it is foolish to believe the same spectrum of diversity does not apply to other human traits like neuro diversity, intellectual diversity, racial, cultural, sexual and physical diversity. It is diversity that makes us the dominant species on earth. Conversely, a lack of diversity leads to all kinds of aberrations.
The core responsibility of a district representative is foremost to listen to the people of that district in order to know their priorities and needs. More generally, the job of a State House representative is to legislate which means to propose, debate and vote on new legislation designed to help the people.
A legacy of love, compassion, and inclusion.
The moon landing when I was about 10 years old. The two most impactful events were the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in South Africa when I was about 33 years old, and then 9-11 which was the most shocking experience in my life, which happened shortly after I became a proud US citizen.
Selling ice-cream at a rugby stadium while in high school, a job I did for about 2 years. My first serious job was as a consulting civil engineer, which job I held for more than 20 years.
A recent book called Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.
Today the most critical challenge is to save the soul of the people of our State and our Nation by steering them away from extreme political ideologies which today in Florida is on a path to authoritarianism, with strong elements of fascism, as indicated by actions and speech emanating from our Governor and the State House and Senate.

I have lived through eerily similar nature of the politics promoted by the South African "National Party" from 1957 to 1990 ... an unambiguous fascist and racist political party that controlled what children were allowed to learn at school, including control of the narrative of the "South African history", who owned and controlled the newspapers, radio and later TV networks in order to control what the people knew and believed. All of that information and even the Unilateral Declaration of Independance upon which South Africa parted ways with the UK, was done by cloaking it in inspirational themes of "Christian Nationalism", Patriotism, and "Freedom". Now I see elements of the very same nature in Florida politics, cornerstones of which have already been proposed and signed into law by a supermajority in the State House and Senate over the past 30 years, so slowly that most people are unaware of it.
My generation in South Africa between the mid 1970's to 1990, used our votes to force the National Party to change their political narrative through each election in order to stay in power, until our votes forced them to release Nelson Mandela in 1990, the same year we immigrated to the USA through a job transfer.

Now we all absolutely must use our votes again to decisively get out of this very dangerous political rut we are in today. The past 100 years have taught a very clear lesson in multiple countries, of the dangers inherent in fascist authoritarianism, and 2024 is potentially our last opportunity to avoid a similar disastrous future for the USA.
One would hope so, but sadly, many politicians become complacent and seem to approach it as a regular job which they have to protect by toeing the party line all the time or changing their "principles" as the political winds change. The solution is term limits.
What I do believe is that a better legislator is someone who is educated and has a broad history of life experiences and knowledge. Someone of character and principles that envelope the broadest spectrum of the people.
Of course it is important to build relationships with other legislators. It is an unrealistic dream to think one can walk into the House and get all your priorities accomplished. By its nature, politics is a game of give and take, where relationships define influence which determines how much one will actually accomplish.
Perhaps. This is my first venture into running for a political office, and if I find that I am an effective politician, who knows what the future might bring?
I do not want to paint myself into a corner naming one bill. Rather, due to the current gross imbalance in our Florida politics, there are numerous urgent needs to submit new legislation and to undo legislation that is an immediate threat to the voice of the people. One high priority topic would be to stop the process of destroying Home Rule, where Tallahassee already has legislation in place to nullify the voice of the people at local community and small city level. Another urgent need is to undo the gross legislation regarding mostly men in government dictating what women are allowed or not allowed to do regarding their decisions of most private and sensitive nature. This is nothing other than a fundamental human freedom issue. Choice should be personal choice, not choice dictated by Tallahassee.
There are numerous urgent legislative needs regarding, for example equal opportunities and treatment under the law, low-cost housing, cost of insurance, right to clean water, safeguarding our natural environment, and responsible development, to name a few.
I strongly oppose Florida Amendment 1, the Partisan School Board Elections Amendment, which would make school board elections partisan beginning in the November 2026. Politicized schools and curricula are typical building blocks supporting fascism.

As a fisherman, I support Amendment 2, a state constitutional right to hunt and fish, so long as it does not place limits on the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
I support Florida Amendment 3, the Marijuana Legalization Initiative which would legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 years old and older. The continued black-market sale of marijuana perpetuates a culture of criminality which disproportionately strikes at minorities and the economically less fortunate population, marking them for life as criminal and thereby denying them to ever reach for the illusive prosperity and pursuit of happiness most of us take for granted.
I support Florida Amendment 4, the Right to Abortion Initiative which I regard as nothing less than a fundamental freedom issue for women. I find the existing restrictions on the Health & Reproductive Rights of women, repulsive.
I am undecided about Florida Amendment 5, the Annual Inflation Adjustment for Homestead Property Tax Exemption Value Amendment which, on the one hand would reduce taxes on homeowners, but on the other hand would take $millions away from tax income to fund numerous needed initiatives.

I support Florida Amendment 6, the Repeal of Public Financing for Statewide Campaigns Amendment that was originally instituted by a republican dominated legislature in Florida in 1998, a position they have held every year since 1996.
