An advisory redistricting commission is a body that advises state legislatures in drafting and implementing electoral district maps. These recommendations are not legally binding, though they can influence a legislature's final decisions. Typically, a state's legislature has a role in appointing members to the state's advisory commission, which can include as members both legislators and non-legislators.
