Four seats on the Akron Public Schools Board of Education were up for election on November 3, 2015. Three of the seats were up for general election. The fourth seat was for an unexpired two-year term.

Incumbents Tim Miller and Curtis Walker Sr. won re-election to the board. John Robert Otterman filled the other four-year term seat.[1]

Incumbent Patrick Bravo, along with candidates Summer Hall, Valerie McKitrick, Garth Starks and Ernie Tarle, were defeated in the election.[2][3]

Debbie Walsh defeated Pete Nischt for the seat with a two-year term. The unexpired term on the board was created following the resignation of member Dave Lombardi who was appointed to a municipal judgeship. Jason Haas, a former member of the board, was appointed to fill the position until the election could be held. Haas stated at the time of his appointment that he did not intend to run in the special election for the remainder of the term.[4]

Akron Public Schools is located in northeastern Ohio in Summit County. The county seat is Akron. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county was home to 541,943 residents in 2014.[5] Akron Public Schools was the fourth-largest school district in Ohio, serving 22,394 students during the 2012-2013 school year.[6]

Demographics

Summit County outperformed the rest of Ohio in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.6 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 25.2 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $49,669, compared to $48,308 for the state. The poverty rate for the county was 15.4 percent, compared to 15.8 percent for the entire state.[5]

Voter and candidate information

The Akron Public Schools Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. All members represent the district at-large. Three four-year terms and one two-year term were up for election on November 3, 2015. Four seats were up for election on November 7, 2017.

School board candidates had to file for this election with the Summit County Board of Elections by August 5, 2015. To vote in the election, residents had to register by October 5, 2015.[8]
